A Nuclear Ruse Uncovers Holes in U.S. Security

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/12/us/12nuke.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

This article, just posted in the New York Times, shows that LANL is not the only or even the major security screw up.

The General Accounting Office set up a fake corporation in West Virginia, got a license from the Nuclear Regulatory Committee, and created purchase orders sufficient to contaminate a New York city block with Americium and Cesium.

News clippings and the future of the County

Some sites are posting the latest news clippings about Los Alamos county. These clippings are about potential environmental releases in the county.

From the point of view of news, these clippings are the current news. From the point of view of the future of the Lab (see notes by GL below), these clippings strike me as a distraction from getting anything productive accomplished.

Anyone else has thoughts on this topic?

TCP1 versus TCP2 Just the Facts

http://tcp1tcp2.blogspot.com/

In following a request from Livermore, a few minutes ago I created the blog listed in the title and found at the URL above.

The purpose of this new blog is to get some of the facts and subtleties listed in an accessible place so that people at Livermore can make better decisions.

How a revolution saved an empire

This article, from today's New York Times and written by a retired British military officer, seems to offer a fresh perspective into the war in Iraq and, possibly, into the future of LANL.

It's bottom line is admit which battles are lost and refocus your efforts into the battles that are winnable. The author claims that Britain's willingness to admit that it lost the battle in the Colonies, learn from its loss, and move on is what allowed Britain to become the British Empire.

Predictions and Science at LANL

People have started to make predictions about the future of LANL. I made similar predictions more than a year ago.

Many of my predictions are on ScienceAtLANL (see link on the left of this blog).

Unfortunately, a number of these predictions are turning out to be true, such as the one on pit production.

Working at LANL did not exist when I was making these predictions. I have not moved the predictions to here.
